You know that scene in all the war films, where a retired vet hears a car backfire and suddenly he’s back in ‘nam dodging bullets and napalm. Well that’s what happened to me when I saw tonight’s The Alien Boy early artwork reveal. Except rather than bullets and napalm, I was transported to my messy teenage bedroom, sitting against the bed as a whole evening was lost to the small black Ps2 box in front of my TV.
We may be trading NFTs on bleeding edge blockchains, but The Alien Boy took me back to loading screens and janky polygons… and I loved it.
It’s not just that the art style looks like it leapt straight out of a HD remaster of Destroy All Humans, it’s something deeper than that. Because when we strip away the metamasks and the gas fees - we’re all just kids on the digital playground trading and collecting with our friends.
And that is the unique genius of The Alien Boy. A blockchain based collectable series that takes you back to when you first fell in love with collecting. When you would carry a pack of pokemon cards in your pocket, not secured by proof of work… but by an elastic band.
Of course, like everybody else I will wait to see what the road ahead for the project holds. But for now, I tip my alien hat to Georgie Boy and the team for putting nostalgia on the blockchain.
